Already have solar on your home but no battery? You don’t necessarily need to replace your whole system.
In many cases, a battery can be added to an existing solar installation, making it possible to store excess solar energy during the day and use it later when your panels aren’t producing.
How does it work?
If your existing solar system has a standard solar inverter, a battery can often be added using a separate battery inverter. This is known as an AC-coupled system and is a common approach when retrofitting a battery to existing solar.
This means you may be able to keep your existing panels and solar inverter rather than starting again with a completely new system.
Is every solar system battery-ready?
Not necessarily.
Before recommending a battery, an installer should look at:
- The age and condition of your solar system
- Your existing inverter and its compatibility
- Your solar system size
- Your household’s electricity usage
- Your switchboard and electrical setup
- Whether you want backup power during outages
- Your local network requirements
For homes in South Australia and NSW, the installation also needs to meet the relevant electrical, battery and network requirements for the property.
What size battery do you need?
Bigger isn’t always better.
The right battery depends on how much excess solar you generate and when your household uses electricity. For example, if most of your energy use happens in the evening, a battery can store daytime solar and make that energy available later.
Your installer should look at your actual electricity usage rather than simply recommending a battery based on the size of your solar system.
Can you get backup power?
Potentially, yes — but a battery doesn’t automatically provide backup during a blackout.
The system needs to be specifically designed and configured for backup. Depending on the system, it may power the whole home or only selected essential circuits such as lights, refrigeration or other important appliances.
Should you add a battery or replace your old system?
That depends on the age and condition of your existing equipment.
If your panels and inverter are still performing well, adding a battery may be a straightforward way to upgrade your system. If your inverter is older or approaching the end of its useful life, replacing or redesigning part of the system may make more sense.
Want to Add a Battery to an Existing Solar System?
Most homes can add a battery to an existing solar system, but your inverter, switchboard and energy usage will decide the best way to do it. Book a solar battery installation quote and we will check whether your current setup is battery-ready and what size battery actually suits your household. Before the visit, read our guide on how to choose the right solar battery so you know which questions to ask. Retrofitting the right battery lets you keep your panels, store more of your own solar and lean less on the grid at night. It is often the simplest upgrade with the biggest impact.
